When you meet a self-assured, successful person or hear a brilliant public speaker, you’d think that self-confidence is a trait that some lucky people are born with. But that’s not necessarily true. Confidence Coach Barrie Davenport said, “Self-confidence can be learned, practiced, and mastered — just like any other skill. Once you master it, everything in your life will change for the better.”
What is self-confidence and how do I get some?
Self-confidence is knowing what you can do and believing in the value that you provide. It has to do with your inner perception of your abilities and worth. Therefore, it’s more of a positive mindset that even the greatest leaders and most influential people in the world need to consciously — and continuously — cultivate. As T. Harv Eker put it: “Successful people have fear, successful people have doubts, and successful people have worries. They just don’t let these feelings stop them.”
But how exactly do they do it? And how can I?
Act the part
Start by projecting confidence and improving your body language. Stand or sit up straight, with your shoulders pulled back and your head up, directly facing the person you’re interacting with. Greet people with a firm handshake. Don’t stand too close to the person you’re talking to, but don’t lean away from them either. Maintain good eye contact, smile, and actually listen when someone is speaking. Because on top of everything, sincerity goes a long way.
Dress the part
When you think you look good, you feel good too, and this can boost your self-confidence. Learn how to dress to suit any occasion, your lifestyle, and your profession. You don’t even need to follow trends or spend a lot of money. Just choose clothes and style that fit you well, make you feel good, and present your personality.
Talk the talk…
No matter how insanely brilliant you are or how good your ideas are, if you can’t express yourself well, nobody will listen. But hey, if you’re like the rest of us and you break in a cold sweat at the thought of speaking in public, we have good news for you: you can learn to be better at it. Take it from one of the most notable public speakers in the world, Brian Tracy, himself: “Communication is a skill that you can learn.” Watch videos or attend talks to see how speakers do it, and then try to emulate their way of speaking. Better yet, there are training courses that you can attend to improve your communication and public speaking skills.
…And walk the talk
As previously mentioned, self-confidence ultimately comes from knowing what you’re capable of. So be really, really good at what you do. Keep learning, keep improving. Self-affirmation is a positive practice for boosting your positivity, but just telling yourself that you’re awesome is not enough; you gotta have something to show for it.
Believe you can do it, so you can do it
It all comes down to one thing: If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect others to do so? Know yourself and your worth. Ultimately, your value as a person is not measured by how you look, how much you have, or what other people think of you. Your worth comes from how much better a person you are becoming everyday.
